Whale Valley is the star here: a desert basin scattered with complete fossilized whale skeletons, some showing how these animals changed from land mammals into ocean swimmers. Add waterfalls, a saltwater lake, desert rock formations, and a craft village, and you get a full day far beyond Cairo’s usual monuments.

I like the private Range Rover-style 4×4 and the freedom it gives your group, along with the chance to see several very different parts of Fayoum in one day. I also like that lunch, bottled water, Wi-Fi, and an English-speaking Egyptologist guide are included. The drawback is the long, sometimes bumpy road from Cairo, with about eight hours packed into a single day.
